Yes, well, despite the fact that I did not blog the last bit of this experiment, I did stay strong to the end.
Total loss: 17.2 lbs.
woo hoo!
I stuck to the no starch or sugar rule for one week after that. You are suppose to do it for 3 weeks. But my husband and I left for Europe and I wanted to enjoy myself. Guess what? I didn't gain any weight!
It's now been a month. I have been exercising more. I'm trying to do P90X at least 3 times a week and go jogging or to the gym at least 3 times a week.
While I do enjoy treats, I'm more careful about how much I eat.
I'm ready to step up the work outs and loose again, even if it's at a slower pace than with the hgc.
Over all, I'm so glad I did the hgc. It was exactly the jump start/ cleansing I needed.
Would I do it again?
Maybe.
The part that makes me hesitant is just how strict you have to be about everything: the types of food you eat, the toothpaste you use (no mint), the lotion you use on your body, etc. You really have to be in the zone and psyched up to complete the program. At least I felt that way.
Also, I really need to exercise. I love being out doors and now that the weather is nice, I want to be moving and going. With hgc, the more you exercise, the hungrier you are. They generally discourage it for the 21 days you are on the restricted diet.
Otherwise, I did not feel hungry or have headaches like I usually do when I'm on a calorie restricted diet. I did not experience ANY negative side effects. I had even had more energy.
When I started the diet, my size 14 pants were pretty tight.
Now I can wear my old size 10 jeans that I've been hanging on to forever.
So there you go. My very scientific analysis of the hcg program.

day eighteen: -.8
Woo hoo! I've now lost 15lbs!
Sorry I haven't posted any pictures! I remember at the end of the day when everyone has gone to bed and its just too dark, etc, etc.
I did have a friend stop by today and she said it looked like I'd been loosing weight. That made me feel awesome.
Elise made chocolate chip cookies today. They smelled really good. I wasn't very hungry though. I woke up with a tummy ache from that chicken last night. It was worth it.
I felt better after a shower. It snowed a lot last night and this morning.
I didn't exercise at all today. Well, I did my little sit-ups, stretching, push-ups routine, but that was it. I spent a good chunk of time looking for a cute coat to buy for London. I found it. The kids were home from school today. I love having them home. I took some pictures of an adorable little boy. I spent a good chunk of time playing with those photos. It's been a while since I've done that. So, now I'm going to spend a chunk of time reading. "Catching Fire," to be exact.
Tomorrow I will run. I feel the need, for speed. (ok, ha ha, I admit, that's a funny image, now stop laughing.)
Staying strong. to. the. end.

It's starting to get hard. I just make such good food.
I've resisted all the goodies. ALL of them.
On this day I met my match.
I fell to chicken, fried in butter, smothered in coconut milk, curry and ginger.
Can't you see? Just try to smell how incredible that smells. Add some jasmine rice. mmm...that smells good, doesn't it?
It beat me.
But I bounce back! I will prevail. I didn't have any rice, just the chicken. It was good. sooo good.
I paid for it in the morning though. I didn't feel very well.
Amazingly, I still lost.

Aww....yeah.
Today was a good day. Wednesdays are the busy ones, but it didn't feel too rushed today. Except when I forgot to bring the fruit bowls to the PTA thing tonight and I remembered as I was picking up Claire from Gymnastics. Then I felt a little rushed. But the rest of the day, no.
Claire's parent teacher conference went well. She is such a wonderful little girl. I'm looking forward to Sam and Elise's tomorrow.
I know I have a ways to go, but I just feel so good. The jeans that I could not even fit into 3 weeks ago are actually a little loose. I can start to see my face when I look in the mirror and not just cheeks and chins.
I'm still so amazed at how well I can function on so little food. I really feel like I have more energy and better mental clarity than I did before. (I suppose the mental clarity is all relative.)
Tomorrow I will take a picture of me eating my favorite treat:
warm strawberries sprinkled with stevia. mmmm.....
I bet you can't wait!

Aaack! I just can't stay on top of these entries.
Hooray! I'm now 13 lbs healthier. 5 more lbs and I will have lost 10% of my previous weight. Which is good. Very good.
So is the grapefruit I've been eating. Who knew grapefruit was so incredibly delicious? In fact, quite a few things I would have passed up at the buffet table for brownies are so appealing to me now. And brownies? They just don't have the same pull.
That's all for now folks, 3 year old is screaming for me to get off the computer.

Day fourteen: -0
The scale.
The too-much-hope-pinned-on scale.
The thing is, I'm so ok with this. You know why? Because I am wearing jeans that are a whole size smaller than I could wear 2 weeks ago!
I have stuck very faithfully to this plan. I know that it will work out in the long run. I think I didn't drink enough water yesterday, my fingers felt a little swollen in the morning.
I ran today. Hard. I even beat my 10 year old son. I felt my muscles work hard and I loved it.
WOO HOO!
I love have energy and feeling good about myself. Even more than I love the scale. So while I will continue to monitor my progress this way, I am going to take my biggest cues from how I feel.
I am more than half way done with the program.
25 days. You can do anything for 25 days, right?
The thing is, I don't feel hungry or deprived. It's a little hard for me to think right now, of eating more. I'm sure it will change, but one thing I've learned (re-learned) is how to tell when I'm full. Eat slowly and when you're no longer hungry, stop eating. This is HUGE, people.
Two words: Costco muffins.
That's what I resisted today. It was a mighty dragon, but I was mightier. booya!
Oh yeah, and my homemade, buttery, garlic bread sticks. I might have gained a pound just from all the butter I was touching. My house smells heavenly.
But I am a whole size healthier!

I'm ok! I'm ok!
I have not fallen off the deep end or off the wagon. I've just been lazy about reporting.
Still feeling pretty good. I'm just amazed that I can function all day and even be happy on only 500 calories. I've been doing light exercises as well.
day 11: + .6 and a little discouraged because I've been SO faithful to this plan. But I had started working out and I probably wasn't drinking enough water. Plus, my friend told me it's normal to plateau for a few days. I made pizza again. It smelled soooo good. I also made cinnamon rolls. That was a mistake. Of all the treats I've made over the past 12 days, those were the ones with the potential to do me in. Folks, I want you to know I stayed strong. A month ago I would have snarfed down a cinnamon roll in 2 minutes and then have eaten all the kids leftovers and then I would have licked the frosting out of the pan. Yes, I felt pretty strong that night. Not one. single. lick.
day 12: - .8 phew... the plan still works. My sacrifices are paying off. We went to Ikea and I summoned all my powers as we walked by samples of swedish chocolate. yay me!
day 13: - 1.0 Yippee! We're back in business. I made the yummiest pancakes for dinner tonight. I also make my own syrup. (no high fructose corn syrup here!) Just plain ol' high calorie brown sugar.
I've been talking a lot about what I can't eat here in these reports. Here's what I do eat. It's pretty much the same thing everyday:
Breakfast:
Herb tea with a tbs of skim milk and a packet of Truvia
Lunch:
Grissino breadstick, 4oz cod fish, one apple, 2 cups of either cabbage or spinach.
Dinner:
Grissino breadstick, 4oz chicken breast, 2 cups of either cabbage or spinach.
Treat:
Strawberries with a packet of Truvia
Plus lots and lots of water.
In 12 more days I'll be able to add in lots more food. Just no sugar or starches for 3 weeks. I feel so liberated from my bad eating habits. I know I still have a ways to go, but I really look at food differently. Some people can go their whole lives without worrying too much about what they eat. I am realizing that I am not one of those people. I will always need to by conscientious about what I consume and how much.
And that's just the way it is.

day ten -0
Well, no weight loss yesterday. I didn't change my calorie intake or the types of food I eat. I did go to the gym yesterday and today. I think that's the only thing I changed. I didn't do heavy-duty work outs. But I did sweat a little.
So, it's ok.
I'm staying strong and feeling healthy!
Temptations yesterday? Yes. But they were resisted.
When the kids came home from school they broke out the Sun Chips. mmm....
Also, for Young Women's we made chocolate chip cookies. Boy, did they look good.
Wednesday is insanely busy for us.
6:30am Gym
7:20am Get kids ready for school.
8:15am Get little girls up and ready.
9:30am Help Claire with homework. Help Anna draw. Read 5 books. Help Claire read 2 books. Somewhere during this time I take a shower.
11:30am Lunch for the girls. Get Claire ready for school.
12:00pm Watched a few extra darlings so my neighbor could take her turn volunteering in our kindergartner's class.
1.30pm Then I went straight to a PTA meeting, which lasted until the kids got out of school.
2:55 pm Hurried to get homework done.
3:50pm Then I took Sam to piano and Claire to Gymnastics.
4:30pm Then picked up Sam. Helped Elise with her homework.
5:15pm Went to pick up Claire.
6:30 pm Came home and fed everyone.
7:00pm Took everyone with me to YW.
Came home 9am and put all the crankies (everyone) to bed.
I must note (because I really feel like whining) that Jeremy teaches a class a BYU on Wed. and doesn't get home until 11:00pm.
I should also note that I wasn't stressed at all. I am not being sarcastic. While I was busy, nothing I did caused me stress. Except maybe when we came home at 9pm to a super messy house. Even then I wasn't worried enough to do to much about it.
Today shall be my cleaning day.
Still looking forward to the scale tomorrow.

day eight -1.2
Spent the day cleaning and playing with the little girls. We had Faith over as well. Her dad's surgery went well and we are praying for a quick recovery.
I think my body is getting use to this routine. I gotta tell you it is so nice not to have everything revolve around food. I mean, I use to eat constantly. I'd reach for something quick and tasty but not very filling. Inevitably, I was searching again for something a few hours later. I can get so much more done when I'm not constantly thinking about food.
I made fajitas for dinner. With guacamole and everything! The kicker was the rich apple crisp for dessert. I know, you are wondering why I am torturing myself. Well the fact is, I'm not. It's like a challenge. I'm slaying a dragon every time I exercise self control. It effects other parts of my life as well. Because I'm more disciplined about what I eat, I'm more disciplined with my time on the computer. I'm more disciplined about going to bed (which, honestly may just be because I'm not so over-stimulated at night anymore). I am more disciplined in my scripture study.
I keep coming back to this scripture:
"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them."
Ether 12:27
So, while all my discipline and hcg may help, the thing that's going to keep me strong in the long run is my reliance on the Lord. I am so grateful for this knowledge. I have many weaknesses. I really should be a more humble person. It's a process, yes? It's humbling to know that this particular weakness will only really become a strength if I have sufficient faith in my Savior, the one who knows us perfectly, weaknesses and all.

day seven -.6
Yes, I know. Only half a pound yesterday. You know what? I'm still elated! And I'm done with "auntie flow" so that could be part of the reason.
I went on a long walk with Anna yesterday. I ended up carrying her half the time, but I still felt good.
I also started a routine of sit-ups, stretches and push-ups.
The past four days I have felt so good. I don't eat much, but when I do, it's super healthy: spinach, cabbage, cod fish, apples, strawberries, cucumbers, lean beef, chicken breast, oranges, grissino bread sticks (yum!), herb tea, and LOTS of water.
I have been cleaning! Yes, cleaning folks. It's like the fuzz that surrounded my brain is lifting and I can make plans and execute them better. I've been baking (which also makes my family happy). I did not bake much before because I'd think to myself, "I'm just going to eat all that." Now I just think of it as making crafts. And the super neat thing is, I don't have any desire to "cheat."
I made caramel popcorn for the family night treat. I, instead enjoy a bowl of warm strawberries with a sprinkle of stevia. I didn't even pine for the popcorn, which actually looked way to sugary. Makes me wonder why I make it for my family? I only rarely do. And, as a matter of fact, most of them thought it was too sweet. Only a week ago, I would have eaten a whole bunch of it and not thought too much about the sugar.
I am typing this in pants that a week ago I could not wear.
It's going to be a great day! And another terrific week!

A word about hcg
I have previously shunned all diet pills and anything that describes itself as a "quick fix." Even when loved ones have suggested them. I've never felt good about it.
I've tried Weight Watchers and feel that it is an excellent program, if you get an excellent clinic and if you are self motivated. When we moved that was not the case. As a busy mother, I found it extremely tedious to go to a place once a week where the people were cranky and not very motivational. For personal reasons, I was not provideing my own motivation.
I enjoy running, but it's hard to do when you are 50 pounds over-weight. I really enjoy going to the gym but because of the vicious cycle of bad eating, then staying up too late, I wasn't going enough.
My friend, who is currently doing this program with me, started her first round last summer. Every time I saw her she looked amazing. Not only because she was loosing weight, but she was radiant and happy. She told me what she was doing and I automatically had skeptical thoughts. I was worried about her and thought for sure she'd gain all the weight back.
But she didn't. Six months later, she is still the same size and happy. No crazy side effects.
So I asked her more about the program.
Turns the program teaches healthy eating and portion control for life. They also advocate whole and natural foods. More vegetables and fruits and very very little sugar and starches. That's seems pretty sound to me.
The 21 day hcg and the 24 day 500 calorie diet really help those of us who have ingrained bad habits that take on the form of addiction. It breaks the cycle, so to speak.
Of course you will gain the weight back if you go back to eating the way you did.
But after the initial weight loss, you feel so good, you have a strong desire to stay that way! That desire becomes stronger than the very real, strong desire to make yourself feel good with food.
I intend to include exercise all the way. I want to be strong and healthy. I know I wasn't doing that before.
I have been very happy so far with the program. I encourage anyone interested to do their own research. There are a lot of negative articles out there. Read them. Often they are trying to promote their own weight loss miracle. There are also lots of success stories. Make sure you are completely aware of what you are getting into.
The biggest thing for me was actually seeing someone be successful with it long term. Someone I trusted.

Someone I trusted.
day six: -1.4
I seriously love getting up in the morning and stepping on the scale.
Yesterday I made 5 dozen cookies to bring to our nephew, Shawn's, farewell. I didn't have a single one. Not even a small taste of the dough.
Shawn gave a wonderful talk at church. We were touched by his testimony and know that he will make a great missionary and servant of the Lord.
It was so good to see lots of family. We went over to Mary and Ed's after sacrament meeting. Bud and Miriam (Jeremy's parents), Ben and Gina (Jeremy's brother and sil), their daughter Jessica, and their son Nathan came down from WA too and will see Nathan off at the MTC on Wed as well, Raleigh and Kim (Jeremy's brother and sis) and some of their kids, and of course Mary and Ed (parent's to Shaw and Jeremy's sister and bil).
There were also TONS of Shawn's friends. He is such an outgoing, likable guy.
Jeremy's family is extremely entertaining. They laugh and have fun and that's how they show their love for each other.
There was A LOT of good food. I'm going to be totally honest and say the temptation was strong. One thing that helped me was the thought that I will be able to eat those things again, and when I do it will be with more control. I also thought about the scale in the morning.
I felt so good about myself when we left, because I stuck to my guns. (In this case, strawberries, a few slices of lean roast beef, spinach and my handy-dandy grossini bread stick.)
This morning I made crepes for my family.
I love crepes.
I will be able to have them again.
The scale this morning gave me strength.
19 days to go.
total weight loss: -9.8

day five -1.6
Ahhh....
Finally, a not so busy day. I was worried about having food all around me all day (and having to prepare it), but I did just fine. I did feel some twinges of longing, but not driving hunger. This is amazing.
I made pizza for my family. It is so good. But I ate my grossini bread stick and was just fine. I made banana bread for my family and was strangely satisfied just to smell it baking in the oven.
I've been going to bed on time. Getting 8 hours of sleep at night makes a HUGE difference.
I have had more energy. I feel good about myself. I can do this!

day four -1.4
Wasn't too bad.
There were a few times a felt pretty hungry.
Busy again. Keeping myself busy has helped with the hunger/ appetite.
I accidently used our regular mint toothpaste last night. That's a big no no apparently.
Total weight loss: -6.8
(my pants are fitting better!)

Day three -3.1
Another super busy day.
But the really amazing thing is that in spite of only consuming 500 calories (maybe a few less) I had energy and strength. More than I think I would if I was eating like I usually do.
I didn't go to the gym, but helping with the wedding tonight definitely gave me a sweating work out. PLUS I saw the cake and goodies and felt powerful as I totally dismissed them. Not even a smidge of longing.
By 10pm I was wiped out though. Which is actually a good thing. I slept. I actually slept.
When I woke up this morning I was not starving, like I thought I would be. I felt refreshed. I had a good night sleep!
I drank plenty of water yesterday. I enjoyed my cod and strawberries very much. Laura got me some fancy bread sticks (NOT the Olive Garden variety--hard, skinny, mostly filled with air ones) which were quite good.
The thing I most enjoyed, however was getting up this morning and weighing 3.1 pounds less.
Woo hoo!
Now I'm totally energized for another day. Day three is suppose to be pretty hard. Bring it on!!
Total Days: 3
Total Loss: 5.4 lbs
Days remaining: 22

Day two -2.3
Wow.
I thought it was going to be harder. I'm sure I will eat my words in a few days (pun intended), but yesterday wasn't so bad.
We were crazy busy too. That probably helped.
I did try to eat slower and actually chew my food. Don't laugh, it's a real problem. I usually give myself 5 minutes or less to eat. Which is why I'm a grazer except I don't chew like grazers do. But I'm working on it!
I made a "food" and "progress" chart. Writing stuff down always helps me.
I did not make it to the gym. Boo. I really like working out. I do. I just have a problem with the alarm clock at 5:30am. Which is a result of the bigger problem of me not going to bed on time. In my defense, I must add that my period started yesterday too. That added to all the other things going on (helping in Claire's class, Sam's piano lessons, Sam's science fair, Claire's gymnastics, Elise's homework, Anna clingy, 4 loads of laundry, Mutual Activity, Jeremy working until 11:00pm) was tipping point, as far as the gym is concerned.
I watched Super Size Me. Yuck. And motivational, I guess.
The good news? Down 2.3 pounds.
(So, yes, I did end up stepping on that square.)
Here's to another day!

Day one
Couldn't bring myself to stand on that little square with the numbers that come flashing up in red.
However, I am feeling pumped about the next 21 days.
That's how long it takes to break a habit, or start one, right?
So this is my little journal of the next 21 days.
A friend of mine and I are doing this together. Hopefully, with a lot of diligence and hard work, plus a little hcg, I'll be on track to healthier habits.
Notes:
The hgc stings a little under my tongue. Today was a "gorge" day. Tomorrow I'm on the restricted calorie awesomeness.
Today I felt good. And strong.
Gym tomorrow.
Tomorrow I will stand on the thing.
